How does the search process work?
While the specific process may vary depending on the position and individual candidate, our search committees anticipate using several stages of evaluation.
Application and Resume Review
Search committee members review applications and candidate materials to assess experience, qualifications, and potential alignment with BETC's needs and values largely based on findings from the CRD process of 2025-2026.
Initial Conversations
Selected candidates participate in preliminary phone or Zoom conversations with members of the search committee.
In-Person Visits and Auditions
Finalist candidates will be invited to BETC to meet with clergy, leadership, and selected members of the congregation. Cantorial visits will include opportunities to experience each candidate’s approach to Jewish music, prayer, education and worship leadership. Rabbinic visits will include a brief sermon (sermonette), offering an opportunity to experience each candidate’s teaching and speaking style, as well as their approach to connecting with and leading a congregation.
Congregational Feedback
As part of the search process, congregants who have expressed interest in participating may have opportunities to experience candidates and share their feedback with the search committees. These opportunities will primarily involve attending cantorial musical auditions and/or rabbinic sermonettes.
Committee Deliberation and Hiring Process
The search committees will consider interviews, candidate qualifications, references, congregational feedback, and the needs of BETC as they select candidates. A negotiation team consisting of the transition chairs and the president will work with the selected candidates to agree on contract terms to present to the Board of Trustees for approval.
These stages represent our general approach rather than a rigid formula. Each search committee retains the flexibility to adjust the process, sequence, or format as circumstances warrant, including candidate availability, confidentiality considerations, and the particular needs of each search.
