November 4-6, 2022
Our first Torah Weekend began with First Friday Community Dinner and Shabbat Services with a D’var Torah by Sofer Neil Yerman. On Shabbat morning, Sofer Yerman led Torah Study with Rabbi Kraus and participated in our Shabbat service, before leading our community in a Lunch & Learn program. Shabbat concluded with Havdalah and a Hebrew Calligraphy program sponsored by Adult Learning. On Sunday, our Religious School students learned with Sofer Yerman, and our community scribed 68 letters in our scroll.
Sofer Neil Yerman traveled from New York City to work with our congregation on our Together in Torah programming. A master teacher and scribe, our congregation felt Neil’s passion about his work and the deep care he brought to every scribing session and program.
After a career in the brokerage industry and in advertising, he converted his lifetime avocation as an artist into a full-time career in 1984, specializing in works that combine calligraphy and art. He launched his career as a sofer in 1987 when he restored ten Sifrei Torah at Temple Sinai of Roslyn NY. He is one of just a few people allowed to interact with and repair Holocaust scrolls. Neil is also a musician who plays clarinet, another of his talents we enjoyed when he played with our own Tefillah band. Comfortable working with people of all ages, and of all faiths, Neil’s educational focus fosters a love for both the physical Torah and for the letters of wisdom it contains.
