What is Klezmer?

The root comes from the Hebrew klai meaning vessel and  zemer meaning song!  In reality, a Cantor is a Klezmer: someone who is a vessel of song to G-d.  Although klezmer is played in secular settings, klezmer music originates in and mimics Cantorial hazzanut, which is the emotionally charged vocal interpretations of prayers sung by the Cantor.

Klezmer was created for dancing.  Using musical characteristics of Cantorial hazzanut, klezmer flows, swings, laughs, cries, it is playful, it is rough, it is gentle, and it definitely gets your hands clapping and your feet tapping!  To hear a taste of Klezmer performed by Boston's Klezmer Conservatory Band, click here: KLEZMER
