Rabbi Sandi Intraub Assitant Director of Education
I believe that all students, young and older, should have opportunities to study all aspects of Judaism with each other, using creative, accessible and interactive methods that inspire further growth and learning. I feel a Jewish obligation to respond to those in need and affect change in the world with education, hands-on work, fundraising, and advocacy, and I look forward to engaging in Tikkun Olam at BETC! I treasure the wisdom in Jewish traditions, worship, holidays, life-cycle events, and rituals, and I enjoy leading others in learning, celebration, and prayer.
Most recently, I was the Family Educator and Havurah Coordinator at Temple Sinai in Brookline, MA. In addition, I completed a Chaplaincy Residency program at Hebrew Senior Life, during which I served as a rabbi and chaplain to patients at Children’s Hospital and seniors at Orchard Cove in Canton and at The Jack Satter House in Revere, where I will continue in that capacity. In 2010, I was ordained from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. While in rabbinical school, I was an intern at Central Synagogue in New York and participated in a thought-provoking and life-changing Rabbinical Student Delegation to Senegal with American Jewish World Service.
I grew up in Queens, New York and graduated from Brandeis University with a degree in Judaic Studies and a Masters in Teaching. Upon graduation, I was a DeLeT (Day School leadership through Teaching) fellow and then taught second and fifth grades at The Rashi School. On a personal note, this July, my partner, Stephanie Rotsky, and I were married in Chittenden, VT, and we live in North Quincy, MA. In my free time, I enjoy kayaking, playing tennis, reading, and relaxing outdoors. I am eager to meet you, get to know you, and engage in learning and celebration throughout the year!
Rachel Schein Youth Program Coordinator
My name is Rachel Schein and I am thrilled to be joining the BETC community this year! I will be serving as your Youth Group Coordinator, Inclusion Coordinator, 8th Grade Teacher and a Rosh Hodesh Group Leader! I am so excited to work with all of the teens in the BETC community and to, along with our amazing teen and adult leadership, bring BEFTY to new heights!
I come to BETC after working for five years as the Youth Director at Temple Sinai in Newington, CT. At Temple Sinai, I created a youth program for students in grades 5-12 that focused on all aspects of informal education. In addition, I have been an active part of the advisor cohort in NFTY-NE for the past five years, and look forward to continuing this work while working with BEFTY. In addition to working at Temple Sinai, I have spent the last five years in a Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Hartford. While in that program, I was an intern and clinician with several mental health agencies and spent the last three years working as a therapist for children, adolescents, and their families, at Wheeler Clinic, in Bristol, CT. Like several of our BETC members, I am a graduate of Muhlenberg College, class of 2006.
I am thrilled to be moving to Massachusetts, not only to begin working at BETC, but also to complete my final year of doctoral training as a pre-doctoral intern at Community Healthlink Youth and Family Services in Worcester, MA. In this position, I will be working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in a variety of therapeutic settings. One of my true professional passions is combining my work in the Jewish community with my work as a clinician. With this goal in mind, my doctoral dissertation focuses on the creation of a training for youth professionals on mental health and mental illness in adolescence, and how to better serve the communities that we work with!
But, enough about me! Let’s talk a little bit about BEFTY! BEFTY is the Senior Youth Group of BETC, open to all students in grades 9-12! We have an exciting year ahead of us! I have been working closely with the teen and adult leadership to create an engaging and interactive calendar for the year. Do you want to be a part of deciding what events we do? Do you want to have your voice heard? Then come to our first BEFTY meeting on Thursday, September 8th at 6:00pm in the BEFTY Lounge at the Temple. At this meeting, we will plan for the year and get to know one another! Then, onSunday, September 25th, we will have our BEFTY Kick-Off event – a Scavenger Hunt in Harvard Square!
As I write this article, we are in the process of planning for and finalizing the details of Jr. BEFTY, our Youth Group for students in grades 6-8. Please stay tuned for more information!
Sue Stein Religious School Secretary
I am native to the Washington, DC area having grown up in Silver Spring, Maryland. I moved to Rockport in January with my daughter Holly (17) to join my husband Mitch who works for Mass Audiology in Peabody. We have two boys who remain in the DC area: Scott (25), who works in the restaurant business as a server and trainer, and Danny (20), who attends the University of Maryland in College Park and is pursuing a degree in secondary education and history. I grew up in an Orthodox Congregation in DC and achieved a long-time goal in May 2010 of becoming a B'nai Mitzvah with a group of five other women at our Reconstructionist Synagogue in Laurel, Maryland where I was actively involved with social action, teaching in the religious school and with the confirmation/post confirmation dinner preparation. In my spare time I enjoy reading, cooking, swimming and walking. Thank you for the warm welcome I have received from so many Temple members. I look forward to meeting everyone and getting to know you all. |
